NSW: Oppn plans for new ministry to keep watch slammed by govt
New South Wales Opposition plans to create a new ministry to oversee government agencieshave been slammed by Treasurer MICHAEL EGAN as an absurdly complicated joke.
The ministry -- known as the Regulator-General -- would hear complaints against otherdepartments, thus allowing the specific minister involved to get on with their real job.
Opposition leader JOHN BROGDEN says the plan will also end a complex complaints systemgiving complainants a one-stop-shop for airing their concerns.
Under the plan, the Privacy Commissioner, Anti-Discrimination Board, Commissioner forChildren and Young People, Office of the Children's Guardian and the Mental Health ReviewTribunal would report to parliament through the Regulator-General.
State Ombudsman BRUCE BARBOUR would also gain broader responsibility with all Freedomof Information requests to be directed through him.
Mr EGAN says it would result in one minister telling another how to do their job.
