NSW: Man charged over backpacker stabbing

SYDNEY, Dec 29 AAP - A 20-year-old man will appear in court on Monday charged over
the stabbing of an Irish backpacker in Sydney.

An argument between two men broke out at a backpackers hostel in Pitt Street, in the
city centre, about 5.55am on Sunday.

During the fight a 20-year-old man used a Stanley knife to wound the upper arm of the
second man, a 25-year-old Irish tourist, police said in a statement.

Police and ambulance officers were called to the scene and the injured man was taken
to St Vincent's Hospital for treatment.

A number of witnesses were interviewed and a 20-year-old man was arrested.

The man was questioned and later charged.

He has been refused bail to appear in the Central Local Court on Monday.
