VIC:Cyclist hit by truck in Melbourne
A cyclist has suffered horrific injuries in a possible hit and run in North Melbourne
this afternoon.
The woman, aged in her 30s, was hit by a truck when she was using a pedestrian crossing
on Flemington Road.
Police say the driver of the truck left the scene, but it's possible they didn't realise
they'd hit the woman.
Ambulance Victoria says the woman suffered "horrific injuries" to her abdomen, pelvis
and legs, and has been taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

NSW:One million emails in Medich murder case
SYDNEY, April 28 AAP - Police are trawling through more than one million emails in
their murder case against property tycoon Ron Medich and four other men, a Sydney court
has been told.
In Central Local Court on Thursday, a prosecution lawyer said police had just handed
over to the accused's lawyers another one thousand pages of the brief in the case.
She said police needed to review more than one million emails that might be relevant
and also referred to the process of going through 11,000 tapped telephone conversations.
Medich, 62, who is on bail and was not required to attend court, is charged with murdering
and soliciting the murder of businessman Michael McGurk in September 2009.
Mr McGurk was killed by a single gunshot to the head outside his Cremorne home on Sydney's
lower north shore.
The cases of four other men charged in connection with Mr McGurk's death were also
mentioned on Thursday.
Mr Medich's case was adjourned to the same court on June 23.

QLD:Aussie soldier arrives home
Eds: Adds quotes from Brigadier Paul McLachlan and other details about ceremony.
BRISBANE, Aug 30 AAP - Lance Corporal Jared MacKinney has been remembered as a loving
father and husband who died in the arms of his mates after he was shot in Afghanistan.
His body was returned home on Monday during a sombre repatriation ceremony in Brisbane,
which was told the 28-year-old nicknamed Crash had found his true calling as a soldier.
Colleagues and family were at RAAF Amberley base for the 4.30pm (AEST) arrival of a
C-17 Globemaster carrying the soldier's body in a coffin draped with the Australia flag
and a wreath.
Lance Corporal MacKinney was killed during an intense three-hour battle with Taliban
insurgents in the western part of Oruzgan province last Tuesday, denying him the chance
to see his unborn son.
Commander of the 7th Brigade, Brigadier Paul McLachlan ADC, paid tribute to the fallen
soldier, saying he "will be remembered as a great mate, a loving husband and father".
"Today, we bring Crash home and restore him to the loving arms of his family," Brigadier
McLachlan told the ceremony.
"He had found his true calling and died in the arms of his mates.
"He passes into the glorious history of the 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment."
Defence Minister John Faulkner and head of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus
Houston, also attended the service.
LCpl MacKinney is survived by his wife, Beckie, three-year-old daughter Annabell and
an unborn son.
He is the 21st Australian soldier to die in Afghanistan, the 10th this year.
He is also the sixth Brisbane-based soldier killed in Afghanistan since June.
Private Grant Kirby, 35, and Private Thomas Dale, 21, were killed by an explosive device
in the Baluchi Valley on August 21.
Three others - Private Nathan Bewes, 23, Sapper Jacob Moerland, 21, and Sapper Darren
Smith, 25 - have died in action since June 7.
Australia's annual Legacy Week appeal, which raises money for the families of fallen
soldiers, began on Sunday.

Vic: War vet robbery victim warns attackers to stop stealing
By Edwina Scott
MELBOURNE, April 22 AAP - A World War II veteran robbed of pokies' winnings says his
attackers should stop stealing before they end up in jail.
Reg Dickinson, 96, was returning to his nursing home residence in a motorised scooter
about 7.30pm (AEST) on Wednesday after a daily flutter at the local Werribee Tavern in
Melbourne's west.
As he turned into the Heathglen Lodge driveway a man and woman aged in their 20s grabbed
and dragged Mr Dickinson off his scooter.
The pair searched his pockets and stole $20, before leaving the British veteran lying
on the ground.
He was discovered by a fellow resident about 30 minutes later, with some bruising and
a large gash to his elbow.
But on Thursday the former Rat of Tobruk was all smiles, despite "a bit of a shock".
A botched hip replacement operation 18 months ago has left Mr Dickinson unable to walk,
and he turns to the pokies for company after the recent death of his wife Gladys.
"I'm strong enough," he grinned.
His son Paul and daughter-in-law Mary said they were "very relieved" Mr Dickinson had
recovered so quickly from the attack.
"We thought he'd be a lot worse," Mary said.
"We tell him not to carry money with him, but he insists on it."
Mr Dickinson, who drove trucks in Italy, France and Egypt during World War II, migrated
to Australia from the UK 29 years ago to start a better life.
Following his ordeal, Premier John Brumby has offered him a chance to participate in
the Anzac parade in central Melbourne on Sunday.
"It would make a complete change, I've never been in the parades here," Mr Dickinson told AAP.
"I would like to go."
Mr Dickinson had a message for his attackers:
"Get out of that before you get any older and you get worse," he warned.
"It'll get you nowhere, only prison, that's all."
Mr Brumby condemned the attack.
"For people to assault and rob someone, firstly of that age, it's just disgusting,
I don't understand that, I don't think Victorians understand that," he told reporters.
Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the attack to contact CrimeStoppers.
The man is described as caucasian, aged in mid 20s, medium build, short brown hair,
wearing blue jeans, a grey hat, a white hooded jumper and white shoes.
The woman is described as slim build with olive skin, long light-brown hair tied in
a pony tail, wearing black leggings, a white t-shirt and thongs.

NSW: Police appeal for information about sexual assault
SYDNEY, April 12 AAP - Police have appealed for information about a man who they believe
is responsible for the sexual assault of a woman and the assault of another woman at a
park in Sydney's west last month.
Police said a man approached a 23-year-old woman and tried to kiss her after he started
chatting to her at the park, bounded by Burwood Road and Park Avenue, in Burwood, on March
7.
The woman escaped and sought refuge at a nearby shopping centre.
Police said a man fitting the same description started talking to a 46-year-old woman
in the same park, before taking her behind a building and sexually assaulting her about
4pm (AEST) on March 9.
Police have described the man as being aged between 60 and 70, 170cm tall, with an
average build and olive skin.
He was last seen wearing a blue and white chequered short-sleeved collared shirt, khaki

NSW: Sydney tea party smashed by storm
SYDNEY, Dec 9 AAP - Thirty people were treated for injuries caused by the latest in
a string of thunderstorms to lash Sydney this summer.
Hailstones up to seven centimetres in diameter and damaging winds tore through an outdoor
tea party at Kemps Creek on Sydney's western outskirts injuring 30 women, who were treated
by ambulance officers, at about 4.30pm (AEDT) today, the Seven Network has reported.
"It looked like the end of the world. I've never seen anything like it," one woman told Seven.
Another woman told Seven that the winds lifted slabs of concrete.
Residents in Sydney's west and north made more than 100 calls to the State Emergency
Service for help with flash flooding and fallen trees.
Electricity was cut to about 10,000 homes.
Flights at Sydney airport were disrupted by the storm and further delays were expected.
A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said: "We've had lots of reports of hail of golf-ball
size and we've had a few reports of hail up to seven centimetres in a couple of places."
Sydney has been lashed by a fierce afternoon thunderstorm almost every day during this
summer's hot and humid weather.
Meanwhile, police today released the name and an image of a man killed by a shop awning
collapse during a storm at Balgowlah on Sydney's northern beaches on Friday afternoon.
Craig Taylor, 53, was crushed by the awning and bricks that fell from the shop's facade.
He died at the scene.
Mr Taylor's family thanked the community for its support following the accident.
"Craig was deeply loved by everyone who knew him, especially by his wife and children.
He was tirelessly devoted to his family," the family said in a statement.

Vic: Vic govt to put $30.2 million for disability equipment
MELBOURNE, April 26 AAP - The Victorian government has allocated $30.2 million in next
year's budget to provide aids and equipment for people with disabilities.
Premier Steve Bracks announced the funding today at Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital,
where 459 children are on a waiting list for equipment appropriate to their disability.
"The package will include a significant amount of money for new aids and equipment,
including here at this hospital $400,000 to get rid of - completely - any waiting list
for aids and equipment," Mr Bracks said today.
The funding, over four years, will also pay for equipment and home modification for
about 15,000 people with a disability across Victoria.
The modification scheme will be extended to cover car modifications for the first time.
Rosslyn Pickhaver, of the Disabled Motorist Association, has praised the move.
"It's a very big breakthrough for us," she told reporters today.
She said it cost several thousand dollars to modify a car to replace its foot pedals
with hand levers, and this could now be funded by the government.
Victoria's 2007-08 budget will be handed down on Tuesday.
